Your fake tan questions, answered!

We often get asked lots of questions on our facebook group ‘Self tanning – tips/discussions/ask the expert’ and on our various social media channels related to tanning so we thought it would be nice to compile a list of frequently asked questions!

1. Should you Moisturise before tanning?

Its important to remove all products from the skin, including deodorant, prior to tanning to reduce the risk of the tan clinging to any residue. It is however, advisable to apply a small amount of moisturiser to any particularly dry areas such as the knees, heels and elbows to avoid tan sticking to the dry skin.

2. How can I prolong my fake tan?

Moisturise regularly after tanning to keep your tan looking perfect for longer. Added moisture will prevent dry skin, and the tan flaking away. Avoid moisturisers with exfoliating properties or fragrances and oils.

Long soaks in the bath may reduce the life of the tan, as will the chemicals in hot tubs and swimming pools.

3. Should you shave right before fake tanning?

If you need to shave, do it at least 24 hours before applying tan. This will give the pores time to close and avoid the tan forming in dots all over the legs. Armpits can be shaved after.

4. How to I prepare the skin? I’m sick of scaly looking legs!

Always prepare the skin by exfoliating prior to tanning. Our exfoliating mitt is infused with charcoal. This gets rid of dry skin and old tan without using a product and so will not leave a residue on the skin.

5. Suddenly, my fake tan doesn’t seem to stick in certain areas, help!

Check for changes in your routine. Have you changed your shower gel, washing powder, perfume or body spray? These could be adding a barrier to the skin, preventing the tan from penetrating this barrier. As soon as you wash off the tan, it will slide straight off the skin. Always exfoliate and have a quick shower prior to tanning. Use a soap that doesn’t coat the skin and rinse off really well.

6. I’ve had a bit of a disaster. How can I remove my tan?

Exfoliate with our back and body exfoliating mitt. The charcoal ingredients found within will help to effectively remove fake tan easily.

7. Which is best, sunbeds or fake tan?

Fake tan of course! You can tailor the colour to suit your skin. You can apply as much or as little as you want. Most importantly its safe to use on your skin.

Skin cancer rates are increasing. The use of sunbeds dramatically increases your risk of developing Melanoma.
