How to get your summer glow on throughout winter

THE TAN EXPERT TELLS… How to get your summer glow on throughout winter

I read a quote the other day that said: “The tans will fade, but the memories will last forever.” How true… the memories stay while our tans definitely fade into the distance!

glowing-skinAs we move into the winter months and our holiday tans have faded while the sun’s hiding behind the clouds, one of the most popular questions I’m asked at this time of year is “How do I keep the summer glow alive?” What makes us feel more vibrant and body-confident is a winter glow to the skin, ideally with the most natural looking tan we can achieve.

Skin types vary and there are many different ways for all skin tones to achieve that desired glow, along with a huge choice of products on the market… from gradual tans to light tans to moisturiser with hints of tan, there’s an endless choice! But ultimately, how good do these products look on our skin if our skin isn’t in the right condition?

It’s so important to look after your skin. For anything to look good on your face or body, the base needs to be cared for and prepped. You wouldn’t paint walls until they were clean, dust-free and smooth, would you?

A little TLC

images • So… keep hydrated! Drink plenty of water as this will show through your skin.

• Get buffing that bod! Use anything like a loofa or bath sponge from top to bottom.

• Make sure you remove your makeup before bed or those pores will clog and your skin will appear dull.

Tanning at home?

If you’re a DIY tanner, the most common way to achieve the glow you want is to go for a gradual tanning product. You can find a variety of brands in all supermarkets or online. What always worries me with those is that the smell tends to linger on for days and there isn’t much of a colour guide to see where you are going with it. If you’ve missed somewhere, it can end up looking quite patchy.

If you have a tan product you regularly use, you can always apply that – but just a little less of it. Instead of double-layering or doing two coats over two days (which is known as double-dipping), just apply the one coat. Creams will always last longer as they penetrate further into the outer layer of the skin. For a natural glow, be more cautious with the hands, elbows knees and feet as in the duller days these areas dry up due to the harsher weather and central heating. So be sure to put extra moisturiser onto these areas before tanning, being careful how much tan you apply.

Call in the experts

To create your winter glow with your spray tan artist, ask for a lighter version of what you normally have – or if you usually have two coats, ask for just one. To keep the tan going, avoid anything that will make you sweat too much - saunas, steams, swimming pools etc – as all of these can affect the longevity of the tan, causing it to fade more quickly or even look patchy. Anything oily can break the tan down, so use oil-free products that encourage the tan to lock in and help to avoid the problem of fading,

For a great skin glow, there are amazing shimmer / illuminator / glow products out there. My current favourite is Charlotte Tilbury’s Super Model Body as it sets the skin off beautifully with or without a tan. Tan Expert Tip: Apply down the side of the arms, décolletage and sides of the legs. To achieve gorgeous, glowing skin this winter, it doesn’t have to involve tan as there are many ways to keep skin glowing by really looking after it.
