Fake tanning stories: Jo, 40, Yorkshire

In the latest edition of Bronzie's tanning stories, we spoke with Jo from Yorkshire.

Why do you choose to fake tan?

I first started tanning when I was around 20 years old and would go on nights out. I wanted to fake tan the parts of my body that were going to be on show, in a way that would make me feel slimmer, more comfortable and more confident in myself. Prior to this, I would sunbath as much as I could but soon became a lot more skin and health conscious when I started to get several nasty sunburns as I’m so fair skinned.

How does fake tanning make you feel?

Fake tanning makes me feel better, more confident, more attractive, slimmer and offers me a better skin tone.

Can you tell us abut your fake tanning routine?

I plan my tanning time in advance so that I can ensure that I have time to exfoliate and shave the day before. Sometimes I opt for another round of exfoliation immediately before tanning to give my skin a boost. When applying fake tan, I always use my double ended mitt as it allows me to tan so quickly and I can do my whole body myself. I tend to use a fake tanning oil as my skin is naturally very dry and mousses tend to crack and fade unevenly on me after a few days. Oil, however, has the opposite effect and really hydrates my skin at the same time. I don’t add more product to my elbows, knees, feet, hands and face I just use what is left on the mitt. I then use a gradual tan daily as a moisturiser to keep my colour up and give me that hydration boost. My tan always fades evenly which is so important to me as I really dislike that ‘cracking’ effect on skin.

What skin tone do you aim for?

In less recent years, I wanted to be as dark as I possibly could. However, nowadays, I like to opt for a light and more healthy glow, with a slightly darker colouring if I'm going out or during the summer months when its more realistic to have a stronger tan.

Jo has been fake tanning for around 20 years.
