How to get fake tan off hands

We've previously written a blog on how to remove fake tan. But since, we've been inundated with requests on how to specifically get fake tan off hands. So, fake tan lovers, we've got you covered.

We've harped on for years about how damaging the sun's UV rays can be to your skin. It goes without saying, we're fake tan advocates. We have been for years. And that's why we developed the Ultimate Fake Tan Range, following years of research, which included many fake tanning mishaps ourselves. Orange skin? We've all been there.

It's harder than you think to give yourself a glow that looks even and natural. If you've applied fake tan and now want to know how to get fake tan off your hands, then these tips are for you!

How to remove fake tan off your hands [Top Tips]

Minty fresh skin? Try toothpaste

Toothpaste is probably one of the last things you'd want to use as a moisturiser on your hands. But alas, desperate times call for desperate measures.

If you Google something like "how to get fake tan off my hands" toothpaste is likely to come up. This is because toothpaste that whitens has a bleaching effect. Self-tanner can be removed from your skin the same way it can be removed from your teeth.

How to do it

  1. Put a small amount on a toothbrush
  2. Gently scrub the problem areas with the toothbrush

This method doesn't work for everybody, and can be known to be a little painful - but it might work for you. It's great for smaller areas and the small folds on your fingers and knuckles. So, you might want to combine it with some more of the methods below.

When life gives you lemons, use lemon juice...

Lemon juice is one of the oldest ways to quickly get fake tan off your hands. Due to the citric acid in lemon juice, it can be used as a natural bleach, without causing the same level of damage as applying household cleaning bleach to your skin.

How to do it

  1. Mix lemon juice with warm water
  2. Soak a small piece of cloth in the mixture and start scrubbing your hands, making sure to get in between each and every creases.

Fake tan can sneak into your hands and get into the cracks, so make sure you are thorough - you don't want to be caught off guard in work, do you?

This should help the product break down and make your tan a few shades lighter.

You can also use sugar and lemon juice together. In this case, the sugar is a scrubber and the lemon juice is a natural whitener.

Search the cupboards for baking soda

Baking soda can be used in so many ways that we've lost count. One of the best things about this clever ingredient is that you probably already have it.

How to do it

  1. Mix two tablespoons of baking soda and only a few tablespoons of water until you have the consistency of paste
  2. Apply the mixture to the parts of your hands that have streaks or are too tanned
  3. Wait 10 to 15 minutes before washing the mixture off. During this time, you can also give the area a gentle scrub.

If you can tolerate the stench, apply white vinegar

Vinegar is another magical thing that is always useful and can be used for many things. Because it is acidic, it's a great way to get rid of the fake tan that has built up on your hands.

How to do it

  1. Put some vinegar on a cotton pad, and then wipe your hands with it
  2. Let the vinegar sit on your skin for a few minutes so it can soak in. At this point
  3. Rinse your hands with warm water, and you should see that the colour is lighter.

Remove dead skin through exfoliation

We've always championed exfoliation (you'll know this if you've seen our exfoliation mitt!). It's a great way to remove dead skin, which includes the removal of fake tan too.

Exfoliation is the process of scrubbing off the top layer of dead skin cells. On the top layer of your skin, there are up to 30 layers of dead skin cells. If your skin is too tanned, this is good news because it means you can take some of the top layers off. You can use a chemical scrub or something you already have at home. Some mitts can help get rid of a tan by scrubbing the skin and getting rid of dead skin cells.

How to do it

  1. Scrub the area for up to five minutes, making sure to get in between the fingers and into the folds of the palms
We always recommend a good exfoliation regime before applying any fake tan. This helps you to achieve a flawless and natural-looking glow.

How to prevent an excess of tan on your hands

Prevention is better than cure, right?

Use a fake tanning mitt

One of the easiest ways to use fake tan without getting it on your hands is to use a tanning mitt. This is a great way to apply mousses and creams that help you get a tan evenly.

Moisturise!

You can keep the tanning product from getting into your skin by moisturising it first. It acts as a barrier between the product and your skin and makes it easy to wash off afterward.

Hopefully this is the last time you Google how to remove fake tan from your hands. Buy quality tan and the rest is history.

We got you. x
